Analysis
Both devices on paper are great. I have an EVO and because of this there are things I know that are not on sites like Engadget or Gizmodo. I got a lot of this chart from Engadget. There are some asterisks(*) next to some things that I will explain. I am by no means claiming to be an expert on this matter but I have been reading up on it a lot. I have yet to use iOS4 but from what I have read it is legit. It provides improvements on the previous OS such as multitasking, custom wallpapers, new add contact screen, tethering, etc. (For more info on iOS4 see http://gizmodo.com/5568954/the-complete-guide-to-using-ios-4). This is the operating system(OS) that the Iphone 4 uses. There are some added features of course like facetime the video chat program that utilizes the Iphone 4's front facing camera which leads to two key points.
- The Iphone 4 has a VGA front call camera which means it is .3 mp. (For more information on VGA cameras see http://www.ehow.com/about_4689722_what-vga-camera.html) this leads me to my second point
- Which I can quote the article mentioned above "The VGA rating refers only to size and not to clarity. 640 X 480 pixels is about the equivalent of a 0.3 megapixel image. The issues of distortion and clarity loss only occur when the image is either enlarged beyond it's original parameters for printing or viewed on a screen that uses a larger resolution. Since most modern monitors and TV screens use a 1280 X 1024 resolution or higher this means that a VGA image will usually appear distorted or blotchy"(For details and examples see http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_cameras/4520-7603_7-5023995-2.html).
While the Iphone 4 wins with frame rate it loses in the fact that according to Engadget video calling is only available over WIFI, again pick your poison. Neither one of these phones on paper is a complete champion. It's all about preference.
The Iphone 4's A4 processor the same one that is in the Ipad is a 1ghz processor just like the HTC EVo's snapdragon processor but it is underclocked (basically not programmed to run at 1ghz) which is why the Iphone4 gets better battery life. Here I can add more to the story for the Ev; since 4g is not available in many places turning of the 4g radio off on the phone and wifi/bluetooth when they are not in use helps battery life tremendously. Also it has been stated that turning of HTC's Sense UI(user interface) makes the battery comparable if not better than the Iphone 4 (Which cannot be verified yet).
The Iphone comes comes with either 16gb or 32gb internal memory. This is an area where most would say that the Iphone 4 wins. I would disagree. 32gb MicroSDHC cards exist but for right now they are kind of expensive. The Evo comes with an 8gb MicroSD card and with the removable storage some users might find happiness in the freedom they get from being limited to only 32gb with the Iphone 4 because they can carry additional files, music, etc on another card with the EVO.
Then there is the matter of the networks one is GSM the other is CDMA. In general CDMA phone i.e Verizon and Sprint get better service. But service aside it is just about your preference. If you travel overseas(frequently) getting a GSM phone is probably your best bet as long as it is at least triband which the Iphone 4 is. There is the matter of 4g data service which for right now is not available in a lot of place but the Sprint WiMax boasts faster download and upload speeds than 3g (See http://www.business-standard.com/india/storypage.php?autono=333436).
Iphone has the higher screen resolution which much like that of the number of megapixel is not a big deal when you are talking about a 3.5 inch and a 4.3 inch screen. Think about having a 1080p LCD tv that is 19 inches. Unless you have a signal coming to the tv at 1080p you can not tell the difference with the naked eye. The same is true for these two phones. You have to zoom in at a large level to be able to tell the difference. There are some other technological details which gives the Iphone 4 the advantage in this category. But again it is all your preference, larger screen with lower resolution, or smaller screen with higher resolution.
The integrated HDMI port at the bottom of the HTC EVO is not comparable to anything on the Iphone 4 because it doesn't have one. There will be or is a dock for the Iphone 4 but both of these phones output 720p therefore because it is built in the EVO wins this category.
The Iphone 4 has a gyroscope which allows the phone to tell what position the phone is in in 3 dimensions. There are even games that utilize this feature too. It is something the HTC Evo does not have. Therefore the Iphone wins in this category.
The argument about the apps, and itunes synchronization is partially true. There are many more apps in the apple apps store. But quantity does not ensure quality, and beyond that there are many apps on both platforms like the famous BUMP, and yxflash (yxplayer). But the Iphone 4 can still have this category. But there is an answer to the app synchronization and music synchronization. It is called DoubleTwist (http://www.doubletwist.com/dt/Home/Index.dt). Check it out, it is just like Itunes because you can get apps, and sync music to the Evo. It also takes playlists/music from your library/itunes and you can sync them just like you would with an ipod/iphone.
Overall nothing on either side make it the champion while others would like for you to believe that one phone reigns superior over the other I disagree. Each one has its' own pros and cons. I tried not to be biased to either side, I own an Iphone 2g also and I will never give it up, and the Evo is another phone I will not let go of. I will be posting a review of the interfaces next.
Any other phone questions can be left as comments.
